Working with fellow lighting designer Gary Campbell, our task was to create a night-time destination for Freeport, Europe’s largest designer retail outlet in Lisbon, Portugal. Our approach was to use traditional architectural lighting techniques to create flow, focus and colour, immersing the visitor within the complex. Beginning when darkness falls, our series of lighting installations play with the range of existing aesthetics and materials such as water, fabric and stone to form the visual journey. Our focus was to draw customers through hierarchical golden archways, using techniques to illustrate the space as calm and inviting. We also lit the main theatrical square in a way that allows for its diverse range of uses but also to continue the playful language displayed throughout the entire project.
